Rivage

Rivage /// 4x8m.

To mark the โ€˜Prรฉsageโ€™ exhibition (Jรฉrรดme Maillet) at the Upstairs Gallery, we wanted to extend the dialogue beyond the gallery walls.

Les Halles en commun quickly became the ideal playground. The site is a former industrial wasteland that inspires both my work and that of Jรฉrรดme Maillet. This ever-changing landscape, in a state of perpetual transformation, blends architecture, minerals and vegetation in unpredictable combinations. The mural, created collaboratively, plays with the codes of this place, allowing a recomposed, unstable and spontaneous setting to emerge.

This painting clearly illustrates my desire to confront painting not only with the surface it occupies, but alsoโ€”and above allโ€”with the landscape in which it is situated.

Here, the color palette is the scene itself: this industrial wasteland awaiting its future, this unseasonably mild winter where the vegetation has barely gone dormant; in the background, a not-so-distant future that is gradually encroaching on the terrain.

Inside, geometric shapes stand out and overlap, arranged neatly in a precarious balanceโ€”that of an old shed at the back of a garden, where, as in a cabinet of curiosities, arrangements of various forms are displayed, evoking what they do not reveal. The contour : sometimes sharp, sometimes sketched as if with a pencil strokeโ€”and the layered materials hint at the strata of a work in progress. One thinks one recognizes a landscape, landscapes, evocations, fragments of this wasteland: a liminal space, a vestige, and a breath of fresh air in the midst of a concrete forest.

At the request of the Galerie Pictura, I have been invited to take over one of the walls of this long white cube. It is a large white square framed by narrow openings overlooking Bourgchevreuil Park. It is difficult to create a contextual painting in such a neutral space.

It is early November, and these small openings to the outside reveal the autumnal vegetation of the adjacent park, which will be my source of inspiration.

This painting is part of a series of two works created in an industrial hall. Both follow the same process: the materials used for the supports were salvaged on-site, and the framing highlights a composition that engages in dialogue with the selected space. The final photograph accompanies the artifact and documents the creation process.

I had long wanted to translate my abstract lettering into three-dimensional forms. The Framework exhibition allowed me to experiment with this idea. Here, the supportsโ€”door elements and various reclaimed panelsโ€”become part of the composition. The materials are sourced and cut on-site, and the paint is also applied within the creative space, an old industrial hall. A photograph taken in this space captures the process.

This composition has its roots in graffiti created in 2023 in an abandoned garage in Vendรฉe โ€” a place I had already marked 35 years earlier with a painted tribute on its faรงade in memory of a departed friend, Ludwig.
In 2023, I took over a closed room in the same building, covered with old, faded wallpaper, to create a new work using paint and spray cans. Struck by the balance of this ephemeral composition, I extracted its visual spirit โ€” without repeating the letters or motifs โ€” to offer an abstract reinterpretation.
Ludwig Von 90 is a superimposition of time: a dialogue between the original gesture of 1988, the spontaneous creation of 2023, and this final transcription in the studio. The work completes this cycle by capturing the energy of these layers of memory.

This series was born from an ephemeral mural, painted spontaneously in the Courrouze district of Rennes. I captured the energy of an urban landscape in transformation, translating its colors and shapes into an instantaneous composition. Today, only a photograph of the original work remains, as the mural itself disappeared a few weeks later.

Back in the studio, I sought to preserve the memory of this fleeting piece. Using the photograph and elements collected on-siteโ€”a brick, a branch, a cinder blockโ€”I recomposed a triptych. The result is a fragmented interpretation of the original mural, not a reproduction, but an attempt to retain its essence and spontaneity.

An installation accompanies the series: the collected objects and the color palette used become relics, silent witnesses to the context and emotion that inspired this creation.
